What is MAT?
Greg Roskopf's Muscle Activation Techniques®
MAT is a very specific, non-medical process that focuses on the assessment, improvement and maintenance of a targeted aspect of human motor control: muscle’s contractile efficiency.
MAT defines the improvement and maintenance of motor control as it relates to the development of muscular contraction as “stability”. The MAT theoretical perspective, its analytical model, and the applied techniques are specifically developed and targeted to improving muscular stability in the realm of exercise and fitness. MAT meets the general exercise model objectives of improved motor control/coordination, increased muscular strength and improvements in limb range of motion.
The demands placed on the sensory-motor system (neuro-muscular and skeletal systems) during exercise require it to react to, and manage, the forces, motions and positions of the entire body via the muscular system’s unique capability to contract. If the muscular system cannot contract effectively this may negatively affect one’s ability to participate in exercise. Motor control may be diminished resulting in an increased risk of injury to various components of human physiology while exposed to the forces associated with exercise and activities of daily life.
MAT as a system is a unique process that fits within general exercise training models. It can take the form of physical training that can be applied in concert with all expressions and applications of fitness activity utilizing physical exercise. The primary benefit of MAT is its ability to assess, prepare and improve an individuals muscular system contractile capabilities in order to participate in, as well as measure the tolerance to the demands of, various forms of physical exercise.
